It’s all in the eyes

Welcome to Faith Connections Friday!

We are in a series for the next several weeks focusing on Psalm 119. If you would like to read ahead, read the entire psalm or a section each week. We are so glad you are here and hope you enjoy the series! Thank you!

Eyes. They’re all around us.

We enjoy the tastes of black-eyed peas and red-eye potatoes. We bask in the flowering beauties of the Black-eyed Susan, Baby Blue Eyes, Ox-eye Daisy, and the Iris. We smile at the big eyes of the tarsier. We simply can’t resist those puppy dog eyes.

Scripture says that the eyes reveal what is in the body—light or darkness (Matthew 6:22-23, AMP). It says that the Word reveals the thoughts and intentions of the heart (Hebrews 4:12, ESV) and is the light that gives direction (Psalm 119:105, NKJV).

Have you looked at someone’s eyes and seen their sadness, their pain, their joy, their delight?

This week, we look at the words of Psalm 119:121-128.

The psalmist continually expresses his discipline and commitment in obeying the Word. He seeks to be taught by God and desires to learn the ways of the Lord.

Verse 123 reveals the psalmist’s heart through his eyes. He earnestly longs for people to know God and His Word. He humbly confesses that his eyes are weary from tears because he sees people rejecting God, and it hurts him deeply. Then, in verse 126, he begs God to do something about it.

The psalmist is struggling and asks God for relief and deliverance. The deeper aching, however, is knowing God more through His Word. He yearns to understand God’s mercy and love. The Word gives him that hope. It is his focus.

Can you relate to the psalmist? Do you understand the frustration? Can you feel the struggle?

Psalm 25 is similar to what the psalmist has been saying throughout our study of Psalm 119. Notice verse 15.

Where are his eyes? They are always facing the Lord because he has hope of salvation.

Faith Connections Challenge: Upon whom or what are your eyes fixed? The psalmist keeps that discipline and commitment to God and His Word. Keep your eyes facing the Lord. There is hope.
