Be the Echo

Do you sometimes wonder if you are seen?

Let me assure you. Yes, you are seen. Everything you do, large or small, is seen.

It’s the little things that can be impactful. Little steps lead to progress. Small changes can make a significant difference.

One of my favorite movie lines is from “Gladiator” (Franzoni et al., 2000). “What we do in life echoes in eternity.” From the first time I saw the movie, that line resonated with me. It connects to my character, my choices, my actions, and my words. It affects why and how I live. (Please enjoy this insightful article by Alain Casseus (2023) about this phrase here.)

People notice your character, your actions, and your words. It may sound creepy, but who’s watching? Well, it’s not just your work colleagues. It’s your family—from the babies to the seniors. It’s the people you meet in the neighborhood or at the store or dry cleaners. Yes, pretty much everyone with whom you come in contact.

That’s a big challenge, isn’t it?

People need to see someone who is real, consistent, and trustworthy. People need to see and learn from an example of love, compassion, integrity, honesty, and forgiveness. People need to see someone who willing takes the time to help in a time of crisis. People need to see someone of great character. People need to see consistency. (Hint: Leadership looks for people with these attributes.)

Why? Because one day, they may ask you to help them work on an admirable trait they see in you. They may ask what it is about you that is so different. They may want to know what makes you handle difficult situations with such calmness and grace. They may offer you a role that requires a person of high character.

Connections Challenge: Consistently practice a commitment to excellent character in your choices, actions, words. You are seen! Be the echo! “What we do in life echoes in eternity!”
