Pain. Is it good or bad?

Pain is real and it’s inevitable. We all face pain at various times in life. Yes, it starts early. Babies face the pain of not being fed fast enough. Toddlers face the pain of waiting for attention or a toy. Throughout life, we all face the pain of rejection, loneliness, betrayal, or anxiety—just to name a few. The comfort is knowing that we all experience pain in some form.

So, the question remains. Is pain good, or is pain bad?

The answer could be both. It depends on your response and mindset.

Physical pain could be bad because when you do not feel well, you hurt. A broken bone takes time to heal, and the waiting and physical therapy to get back to “normal” could be painful. Yet, as you progress and get stronger, you may even feel better. So, it’s bad for a limited time, and then it’s good.

Emotional pain could be bad when you lose a loved one or someone rejects you. The devastating pain is real and could last a while. Yet, as time passes, you may recognize that if the pain did not occur, you would not have been able to witness a miracle or something or someone even better entering your life.

Connections Challenge: Identify a situation that is painful. Notice your response and mindset. Meet with a trusted friend who can help you to see the experience from a different perspective. If you see the bad, ask them to help you see the good. It could give you great encouragement and change your outlook and direction.
