Excellence, patience, waiting

Benefits of Waiting

Recently, my husband had to visit the emergency room. If you have experience with hospitals, you know that the waiting can seem too long, especially when you are hurting.

Yes, waiting can seem like forever. We wait to finish school. We wait for the wedding. We wait for babies and grandbabies. We wait for the child to return from deployment. We wait for the job offer. We wait for Christmas. We wait for vacation. We wait for the trials and difficulties to end. And then we wait for the bills!

We do not like waiting. We are trained to get what we want when we want it—now! Microwaves. Self-serve gas stations. Self-checkouts at the stores. ATMs instead of going into the bank. Amazon deliveries this afternoon or within a couple of days.

What are the benefits of waiting?

Waiting develops and strengthens you. For example, getting a diploma requires several years of dedicated study. A promotion requires months or years of acquiring the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to succeed in the role. Reaching a certain level of health requires focusing on discipline, taking prescribed medication and therapies, and living a healthy lifestyle.

Waiting gives you time of discovery and reflection. While completing education or aiming for a promotion, you may discover the major was no longer the direction you wanted to focus or the role may not be a good fit. The time you invested gave you the opportunity to explore your passions and move toward fulfilling your purpose. Healthy goals and activities take time to build overall strength and wellness.
