Bittersweet Treasures

My husband and I recently finished a spectacular cross country road trip. At the end of our adventure, I flew to visit my son and his family for a few days and gave hubby the opportunity to finish the road trip solo to visit/hike other places on his bucket list. (Actually, I had not visited them for a few months and was having withdrawals.) Then, my son and his firstborn came back with me. My husband picked us up from the airport so we could spoil them for a few days.

Well, yesterday, they went back to their home. Yes, being a mom and somewhat new grandma is bittersweet. (You can imagine the hugs, kisses, and tears.)

How is it bittersweet?

My husband and I are two imperfect people. We did our best to raise a treasured, dearly loved, and imperfect child to be strong and courageous in an imperfect world.

My son and daughter-in-love are two treasured, dearly loved, and imperfect people. They are doing their best to raise treasured, dearly loved, and imperfect children to be strong and courageous in an imperfect world.

This week, as I noticed the interactions between my son and grandson, I remembered the ways my husband interacted with our son. They are so similar! They are calm when having to be firm. They extend unconditional, gracious love. They are such amazing fathers! It is a refreshing reason for deep joy and humble gratitude.

Connections Challenge: The picture is my husband taking a picture of our son taking a picture of his son taking a picture with his new camera. It reminds me how children mirror their parents. It also reminds of the importance of treasuring the times with our children. Though we are all imperfect people, may we do our best to raise treasured, dearly loved, and imperfect children to be strong and courageous in an imperfect world.
